NMSU art department calls for artwork, scholarship awards for art students

Whether you're an art major or not, any student from main campus at New Mexico State University can submit up to three pieces to exhibit in the upcoming art show coordinated by NMSU's Department of Art. The annual "Art Scholarship Awards and Juried Student Show" opening reception is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, March 16, at the NMSU Art Gallery.

Students are asked to submit their work digitally for the first time using the university's Blackboard system, which allows the juror to have immediate access for comparative analysis. The system will be open to students to submit their art beginning Feb. 15. They can log onto Blackboard at http://learn.nmsu.edu/ where they will find a link to the instructions and applications for the "Art Scholarship and Juried Student Show."

While non-art majors may submit their work, scholarships are only available for art students.

"Our scholarships will include funds for traveling expenses to visit museums/exhibitions outside our region and the purchase of works of art, as well as funds to help undergraduate and graduate students with school and career expenses," said Elizabeth Zarur, an associate professor in the Department of Art. "Those are prestigious scholarships and we are very excited about all of the creative opportunities it will promote."

For scholarship opportunities, College of Arts and Sciences art students need to sign up using the online application system, "Scholar Dollar$," found at http://scholarships.nmsu.edu/. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, Feb. 15. After signing up for Scholar Dollar$, art majors will be able access Blackboard to submit their digital portfolios and/or three works for consideration.

Non-art majors, who would like to participate in the Juried Art Show, must email the Art Gallery at artglry@nmsu.edu with their names and banner ID information for access into Blackboard.
Artists who wish to participate in the Juried Art Show must submit their digital images by Tuesday, March 6, at midnight.

Students whose artwork is chosen for the show will be notified by 5 p.m. March 8. Art selected for the show must be delivered to the NMSU Art Gallery from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 10.

Awards and scholarships will be presented during the opening reception beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, March 16. The exhibit runs through Apr. 4. Contact Emilia Casillas at emiliac@nmsu.edu or 575-646-2545 for more information.
