NMSU to hold memorial breakfast for civil rights leader

New Mexico State University's Black Programs office will hold its annual breakfast in memory of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Friday, Jan. 12. The breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Corbett Center Ballroom.

Highlights of the breakfast will include the presentation of the Racial Harmony Awards, the recognition of the Martin Luther King Jr. essay winners and the presentation of the Andrew L. Wall scholarships.

The 2001 Racial Harmony Award recipients will be NMSU Arts and Sciences Dean E. Rene Casillas and local entrepreneur and youth leader Joe Bob Sellers.

The Andrew L. Wall scholarships are awarded to selected seniors from area high schools who are planning to enroll at NMSU for the 2001 fall semester.

Essay contest winners are selected from Dona Ana County elementary, middle and high schools. Each winner will receive a $100 U.S. savings bond and a certificate of recognition.

The guest speaker for the program will be announced at a later date.

Breakfast tickets are $15 each with proceeds supporting scholarships, emergency loans and activities that enhance the quality of life for all NMSU students.
