RecycleMania is a recycling competition between 605 schools representing all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, five Canadian provinces and one school in Great Britain, said Alec Cooley of RecycleMania and director of Recycling Programs for Keep America Beautiful.

NMSU recycled 1,575 pounds of soda bottles and cans, 18,750 pounds of cardboard and 51,650 pounds of paper during week three of the competition.

NMSU typically sends about 24,000 pounds of trash to the landfill per week, said joni newcomer, environmental policy and sustainability manger at NMSU. RecycleMania tracks the weight of trash to show how much of it can be diverted from the landfill to recycle bins during the competition, as waste minimization. This week's trash-run weighed in at 18,275 pounds, meaning that NMSU diverted 5,725 pounds from the landfill.

NMSU placed fifth in RecycleMania last year and second in 2010.

NMSU's Aggie Recycling collects plastic #1 (PET and PETE), aluminum cans, paper, cardboard, steel, tires, asphalt, concrete and yard waste. During RecycleMania, NMSU only counts #1 plastic, cans, paper (all types) and cardboard. Items can be dropped off at the Aggie Recycling Center between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Items also can be dropped in the many recycling bins on campus.

RecycleMania 2012 started Feb. 5 and will run through March 31.
