NMSU English students honored for academic excellence

New Mexico State University students Jesse Allred, Tiffany Janiak and Irene Mata are recipients of Verna Newman Rule Scholarships of $5,225 for the 2000-01 school year.

The scholarships are given each year to junior, senior and graduate English majors for their academic accomplishments and contributions to the English department.

Allred, of Las Cruces, is majoring in English and philosophy. The son of Kelly and Lynda Allred of Las Cruces, he also was honored as the College of Arts and Sciences' Outstanding Junior this year.

Janiak, a senior from Fridley, Minn., is majoring in English and Spanish.

Mata, a graduate English student, is the daughter of Ernesto and Irene Mata of El Paso.

The scholarships were established in 1994 through a donation from Donald W. Rule of Tucson, Ariz., in memory of his wife Verna who died in 1992. She was a 1949 NMSU English graduate. Donald Rule died in 1999.
