RecycleMania is a recycling competition between 605 schools representing all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, five Canadian provinces and one school in Great Britain, said Alec Cooley of RecycleMania and director of Recycling Programs for Keep America Beautiful.

Results of the competition were posted on April 13, with only American University, Antioch University Seattle, Massachusetts Maritime Academy and California State University-San Marcos coming out ahead of NMSU.

NMSU's overall recycling rate during the competition was 78.66 percent, while first place American University recycled 85.16 percent of its waste during the same period of time.

During the competition, NMSU recycled about 1,200 to 1,300 pounds of plastic bottles, 45,000 to 50,000 pounds of paper, and between 12,000 and 18,000 pounds of cardboard per week. The overall rate of recycling at NMSU during RecycleMania is higher this year than last.

RecycleMania estimates that NMSU saved 290 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent being released into the atmosphere as greenhouse gases during the 2012 competition. This is the equivalent of taking 154 cars off the road or the average energy consumption of 77 households.

Recycling does make a difference. Though the competition is over till next year, Facilities and Services' Aggie Recycling operates year round, collecting plastic No. 1 (PET and PETE), aluminum cans, paper, cardboard, steel, tires, asphalt, concrete and yard waste. Items can be dropped off at the Aggie Recycling Center between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Items also can be dropped in the many recycling bins on campus.

RecycleMania 2012 ran from Feb. 5 through March 31.
