NMSU puts a business spin on summer camp

Parents looking for a different kind of summer camp for their kids may want to try New Mexico State University's Camp Innoventure.

Run by NMSU's Arrowhead Center, Camp Innoventure gives students entering sixth to eighth grade an opportunity to learn how to start their own businesses.

In the weeklong session, campers learn how to brainstorm business ideas, write a mission statement, put together a short business plan and create a product that can be sold at the Las Cruces Farmer's and Crafts Market on the last day of camp.

The camp has two sessions this summer, running from June 4-9 and June 11-16. The deadline to apply for the first session is May 30. The application deadline for the second session is June 5. Camp Innoventure costs $40, which includes project materials fees, workbook materials and a camp backpack.

Camp Innoventure is modeled after Arrowhead's yearly Innoventure competition, which encourages students from across the state to use science, technology, engineering and math to solve business problems and create new and innovative products that may have true marketability.

"Our hope is that some of our Camp Innoventure kids will be so inspired by their experiences that they will help to organize a school team that can take part in the Innoventure competition," said Marie Borchert, director of Innoventure at the Arrowhead Center. "That will help them expand further on the entrepreneurial skills they first developed at the camp."

Two scholarships to Camp Innoventure are available for each session to students based on need and interest level. For more information, contact Borchert at 575-646-7839 or visit campinnoventure2012.eventbrite.com to register.
