New Mexico State University Communications Department announces promotions

Ronnie Garver, senior graphic designer in New Mexico State University's communications department, has been named assistant director of university communications for publications.



Ronnie Garver has been named assistant director of university communications for publications in New Mexico State University's Communications Department.

Garver has been the department's senior graphic designer since 1997, when he graduated from New Mexico State with a bachelor of fine arts degree.

The Alamogordo native was named to the position Jan. 2 following the retirement of Betty Sadler. Sadler had been assistant director of university communications since May 1991.

In other changes in the department: Bernadette Smyth has been promoted from publications coordinator to assistant publications manager; Rita Popp, a communications specialist, has taken on the added duties of marketing coordinator; Heather K. Feldman has been hired as publications coordinator; and Darren C. Phillips has been hired as staff photographer.

Smyth, who joined the communications department in 2000, is a native of Kilmaconogue, County Wicklow, Ireland. She has a bachelor of arts in English and journalism from Suffolk University, Boston, and a master of arts in English and creative writing from New Mexico State University.

Popp worked for the department from 1985 to 1990 and, following graduate school, returned to work from 1993 to the present. Among other duties, she has been editor of Aggie Panorama, the university's alumni publication, since fall 1997. A native of Donahue, Iowa, she previously worked as a public relations account executive for Edwin Neuger and Associates in Minneapolis, Minn., and as a reporter and editor for the Las Cruces Sun-News, the Dixon Evening Telegraph in Dixon, Ill., and the Daily Times in Ottawa, Ill. She has a bachelor of arts in English from Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a master of arts in journalism from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill., and a master of arts in English from New Mexico State.

Feldman was hired as publications coordinator Jan. 9. Originally from Jacksonville, N.C., she has worked as a public affairs specialist and co-editor of NOVA magazine at the University of Texas at El Paso, Texas, and as a writer and editor of The News, a weekly publication of the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. She has been a reporter for newspapers in Maryland and Virginia and a production assistant intern for C-SPAN in Washington, D.C. She has a bachelor's degree in journalism and English, with a political science minor, from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich.

Phillips was hired as staff photographer Oct. 10, 2001. He has worked as a photography intern at the Observer-Dispatch newspaper in Utica, N.Y., and the Metro Newspapers chain in San Jose, Calif, and as a freelance photographer for the Sunday Independent newspaper in Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds a bachelor's degree in journalism, with a creative writing minor, from San Jose State University.

Phillips was named to the position following the departure of Michael Kiernan, who has become chief of photography services at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
