New Mexico State University astronomy professor receives research grant

New Mexico State University astronomy professor Jon Holtzman received a two-year research grant from the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium (NMSGC) for his research in the nature of spiral galaxies.

The $19,200 grant will enable Holtzman and graduate students Bhasker Moorthy and Octavio Valenzuela to research some of the mechanisms that affect the shapes of spiral galaxies. A significant part of the work will use data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, an extensive collaborative survey at the Apache Point Observatory.

Some specific questions the study will address are the nature and origin of the central bulges of spiral galaxies and the degree to which spiral galaxy disks are symmetrical.
