Art a la Carte presents "A Taste of the Black Box Theatre"

Art a la Carte, the New Mexico State University Art Gallery's lunchtime performance program, will present "A Taste of the Black Box Theatre" on Friday, Feb. 1.

Local actress Janet Mazdra plays the role of Emma in "Tell Me on a Sunday." New Mexico State University Dance Ensemble member Candace Craig performs in "Saturday Soliloquies."

a Carte features performances from the literary, music, dance and experimental arts community. It takes place from noon to 1 p.m. on selected Fridays at the Art Gallery in Williams Hall.

The performance will showcase highlights from the No Strings Theatre Company production "Tell Me on a Sunday," a one-woman musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The "mini-opera" tells the story of Emma, a young woman who travels to New York to move in with her boyfriend and pursue a career as a hat designer. Upon intercepting messages from her boyfriend's new love interests, Emma leaves him. This begins a personal journey that takes her from the nightclubs and swimming pools of Los Angeles to the runways of New York as she works her way through a series of doomed relationships and pursues her own version of the "American dream."

"Tell Me on a Sunday" was written originally as a television production. It later was combined with "Variations," a series of compositions for the cello, to form the musical "Song and Dance." No Strings Theatre Company's production is directed by Dale Pawley and stars local award-winning actress Janet Mazdra.

Excerpts from the musical will be preceded by "Saturday Soliloquies," a dance piece that looks at the feelings associated with loving and losing and previews Emma's emotional roller coaster ride.

It is choreographed by New Mexico State University's Debra Knapp, assistant professor of dance. New Mexico State University Dance Ensemble members Amy Barnhart, Aimee Cameron, Candace Craig and Carolyn Estock each portray an aspect of Emma's life.

All Art a la Carte events are free and open to the public. Free parking will be provided. Guests are encouraged to bring a bag lunch. Williams Hall is located on University Avenue, east of Solano.
