La Sociedad para las Artes at New Mexico State presents novelist reading

Published fiction and non-fiction novelist Padgett Powell will be featured in La Sociedad para las Artes' Spring 2003 Visiting Author Series at New Mexico State University Friday, March 14.

Powell has published four novels and two collections of short stories. His latest novel, "Mrs. Hollingworth's Men," was published by Houghton Mifflin. He also is the author of "Edisto" and "Edisto Revisited."

Fiction and non-fiction works by Powell have appeared in "The New Yorker," "Harper's," "Paris Review," "Grand Street," "Esquire," "The New York Times Book Review and Magazine," "Oxford American" and elsewhere. His work also has appeared in "The Best American Short Stories" and "Best American Sportswriting" anthologies.

He has won the Prix de Rome and a Whiting Writers' Award and has taught writing at the University of Florida since 1984. He has taught at the Sewanee Writers' Conference and at the Summer Literary Conference in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Powell will be joined by graduate student Rachel Haley Himmelheber who will be reading from her thesis.

The reading is free and open to the public. Non-perishable food donations for Casa de Peregrinos will be accepted at the door.
