NMSU College of Business receives scholarships, internships from innovative company

New Mexico State University's College of Business has a new scholarship and internship program. OneEighty, a startup company located at the Arrowhead Center Technology Incubator, will provide three scholarships that cover in-state tuition and internships for undergraduate marketing students. A check presentation and reception are scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the lobby of the NMSU Business Complex.

Garrey Carruthers, dean of the NMSU College of Business and vice president for economic development, said these contributions are important to the academic and professional success of students at the university.

"Giving students an opportunity to experience real-life business situations is an important component of academics in the College of Business," Carruthers said. "OneEighty is an innovative company with a bright future. This company is making huge strides and understands a successful company not only provides a great service or product but it gives back to the community. Providing a direct learning opportunity to these students is priceless."

Professor of marketing Robin Peterson said OneEighty is a dynamic company that uses state-of-the-art methodology to expand business. He said this approach will benefit the student interns greatly as well as the Las Cruces Community.

"It provides students with insights that will be invaluable in the workplace. Further, it will make a very impressive appearance on the students' resumes," Peterson said.

A trio of partners, Jon Forrest, chief executive officer and co-founder, Tim Swope, chief operations officer and co-founder, and Anthony Juarez, Latin American marketing director, established the company. OneEighty provides main street merchants with a way to broadcast and pre-sell exclusive offers to targeted local consumers using only SMS text on a regular cell phone or a smartphone.

Forrest said the collaboration with NMSU and the confirmation of the scholarship program reflect the true meaning of the company's slogan, "With OneEighty Everyone Gets a Great Deal." He said the scholarship and internship program is another way to live up to the slogan.

"The three students chosen for this spring internship and future scholarship recipients will be pioneers," Forrest said. "This internship will be far and away one of the most impactful experiences of their academic careers. Besides getting real-world application of all the great skills they are learning in their course work, they will also be given an inside view of a startup company, and be able to contribute directly to the growth and success of OneEighty. We will help them develop the interpersonal and leadership skills that employers need now more than ever."

Forrest said the company is excited about the opportunity and is looking forward to a long-term relationship with NMSU, the College of Business and the Arrowhead Center.
