NMSU men's rodeo team takes first place in season opener

The New Mexico State University rodeo team started the spring 2013 season off with a positive note when the men's team took home numerous individual wins, as well as the men's team placing them first in the region, after the season opener held in Fort Huachuca, Ariz.

"This was a great start to our spring season and I see our men and women teams and individuals dominating in the rodeos to come," said Jim Brown, NMSU rodeo coach. "Our team is only going to get better."

NMSU fared well with wins in the bareback riding, team roping, tie-down roping, saddlebroncs and men's all-around.

The men did especially well in the team roping category by taking the top four spots, Bryce Runyan and Cody Runyan both took first place, Cody Mirabal and Reno Eddy both earned second place. Mirabal also took the top spot in tie-down and men's all-around.

Other wins for the men include Tony Buckman in bareback riding where he took first place; Cooper Dewitt, third place in saddlebroncs; and Tyke Kipp, second place, and Ky Barry, third place, in steer wrestling.

The women also did well over the weekend. Nicole Sweazea took second in goat tying and Kayla Lewis took third in barrels. The women also placed in breakaway and took fourth in women's team.
