CLABS HOSTS SPANISH SPEAKER ON INTERNATIONAL BORDER

The Center for Latin American and Border Studies will host "Border Crossing Experiences at Bridges in the El Paso-Juarez Region" with Hector Padilla, of the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez, at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 9. Crossing an international bridge requires an inhabitant of the border to enter a different country with its own culture, codes and laws while still remaining in what is essentially their own locality. Crossing the border is, on one hand, a time-consuming routine, and on the other, an extraordinary change. Using the anecdotes of Juarense undergraduates at UTEP, this talk discusses the international bridge as a third country, with its own rules and actors, as well as the questions of subjectivity that naturally arise from the complicated, yet ordinary, act of crossing al otro lado.

This lecture will be in Spanish and held at the Nason House, 1070 University (right across from FedEx/Kinkos). Refreshments will be served. It is free and open to the public.
