Dick's Café and Smokey Dick's BBQ NMSU location opening this week

Dick's Cafe and Smokey Dick's BBQ will join the Frenger Food Court food lineup on the New Mexico State University campus this week.

"I'm a graduate of NMSU and I am honored at the opportunity to give something back to my school and the community," said Ace Perez, owner of Dick's Café and Smokey Dick's BBQ. "From a business perspective, it just made sense to grow the business in this direction and offer students something they might not have been able to find on campus until now."

Dick's has been feeding Las Crucens since 1959, when Perez's grandfather opened Dick's as a lunch counter in the back of an old Skelly's truck stop on the old highway bypass that no longer exists. The first Dick's restaurant opened next to the train tracks in Mesilla Park. Both Ace Perez's mother and father worked there.

Over the years, the business has grown to include other restaurants and a line of bottled salsa, barbecue sauce and barbecue rubs.

"The menu has grown, but it has always centered on good Mexican food and some of the best green chile cheeseburgers you'll find anywhere," Perez said. "The menu can always evolve, but the best part about Dick's is what we won't compromise on: great food and the best hometown customer service you can find."

Perez says that the new location in Frenger Food Court, located across from Zuhl Library, will feature some favorites from other Dick's locations, but also have some unique offerings.

"We really put some thought into the concept of this location of Dick's and Smokey Dick's. The quality of the food can't be compromised, but it has to be ready fast," Perez said. "I also wanted to offer some different things that you can't find at the other location, something that really catered to the college appetite. I think the grilled chicken salad with the dried cranberries and apricots will hit the spot for a lot of students."

The breakfast menu offers pancakes, French toast, a toasted breakfast sandwich, breakfast tacos and brown sugar maple oatmeal. For lunch, the options range from burgers to smoked brisket sliders to a bacon-wrapped hotdog. Or, for those interested in healthier options, Dick's and Smokey Dick's will offer a chicken Caesar salad and a grilled chicken salad with romaine, spinach, dried cranberries and dried apricots. The restaurant offers a variety of sides including their famous queso.

"I am again very excited to bring to our campus another very popular local concept," said Tammy Anthony, NMSU assistant vice president for Auxiliary Services. "When Dick's provided their proposal it was clear that they could provide the things they are so well known for, but also reach out in other ways for some healthy options. I hear from our faculty and students all the time that healthy options are very important. Ace's response was that he could make a 'killer salad.' This response not only provided a healthy option for NMSU, but it really speaks to the excitement and partnership Dick's is offering to NMSU."

Dick's and Smokey Dick's will be open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

"We can't wait to serve the students, faculty and staff at New Mexico State University," Perez said. "Stop by and see us!"
