NMSU's College of Health and Social Services to host the Dean's First Annual Health Symposium

New Mexico State University's College of Health and Social Services will host the Dean's First Annual Health Symposium, titled "Understanding the Affordable Care Act." The educational outreach effort will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 1 at the Las Cruces Convention Center. The event is free, but registration is required.

"It's going to be an exciting and highly educational seminar," said Tilahun Adera, dean of the College of Health and Social Services. "In my mind, this is the most significant overhaul of our medical system since 1965 when Medicare and Medicaid were implemented. This is truly a significant piece of legislation."

The Affordable Care Act was signed into law in 2010. While controversial, the 2,000-page law was designed to increase the amount of people covered by health insurance and implement a number of health insurance-related reforms.

"The ACA implementation will be in full force by 2014," Adera said. "The implementation has a far-reaching impact in the U.S. and in New Mexico. There won't be any sector of society that won't be impacted and the audience will learn what this act means to them."

Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. Presentations will run from 9-11:30 a.m. Lunch will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A panel discussion will be held from 12:30-2 p.m. Free CEUs will be available for public health science and social work professionals, with a general health certificate also available.

The event is sponsored by Con Alma Health Foundation, the Southern Area Health Educational Center and NMSU's College of Health and Social Services. To register, visit http://chss.nmsu.edu. For more information, contact Joy Fresquez Mynatt at mynattj@nmsu.edu or 575-646-5061.
