NMSU Strengthening Families Initiative to host Fatherhood Buzz

New Mexico State University's Strengthening Families Initiative alongside, Milo's Barber Shop and La Clinica De Famila Early Head Start, will host Fatherhood Buzz, an initiative to increase awareness around responsible fatherhood and parenting issues, 9 a.m. on June 15 at 304 Wyatt Drive in Las Cruces.

"We hope that fathers and their children come together for this event to celebrate Father's Day," said Chris Delgado, extension associate II in the NMSU Family Wellness Program. "We want to help promote responsible fatherhood and promote the importance of father's involvement in their children's lives."

The Fatherhood Buzz event was organized by the Family Wellness Program through the NMSU Strengthening Families Initiative as their summer community outreach event. The event is held across the nation but this will be the first time in Las Cruces.

"Barbershops have been one of the most trusted community resources for men in the past," Delgado said. "This outlet provides a unique opportunity for peer education to share healthy information about fatherhood and the role of fathers in society."

Various local organizations will be participating by conducting child-friendly activities for dads and their families. At the event Milo's Barber Shop will be cutting hair and giving out a coupon good at any locations throughout the Dona Ana County and Hatch.

The Fatherhood Buzz event will also raffle off prizes such as a one month gym membership to Planet Fitness, free two-year brake job courtesy of Big O Tires and a gift certificate for Pro's Ranch Market.

President Barack Obama's Fatherhood Buzz Initiative was initiated last year with 108 organizations participating across the nation. Barbershops and community partners are selected based on a set of criteria including, being a business in good standing and having a favorable community reputation.
