New Mexico State University College of Engineering to hold open house

The College of Engineering at New Mexico State University will hold an open house from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, for high school students considering an engineering major.

The open house will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the university's Physical Science Laboratory auditorium. It will include tours of the departments of chemical engineering, civil and geological engineering, Klipsch School of Computer and Electrical Engineering, engineering technology, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering and surveying engineering, Melon-Sanchez said.

It will also include a panel discussion by New Mexico State engineering students and alumni on the specifics of different majors and advantages the College of Engineering offers students, such as summer internships and cooperative work agreements with private companies, Melon-Sanchez said.

There will be demonstrations of robotics, manufacturing laboratories, computer laboratories, civil engineering design and bridge testing simulations, environmental engineering, water resources engineering, lasers and communications systems, she added.

"The students will get to see how a concrete canoe and an off-road vehicle are designed and built, as well as demonstrations of state-of-the-art surveying equipment, security technology and space-based communications systems," she said.
