Friday, Oct. 18, will be the NMSU College of Engineering Night at the speedway. Student members of the SAE Mini Baja club will be at the track displaying their mini Baja vehicle that they designed, built and competed with this year in Bellingham, Wash. The students also will be talking to the fans during intermission about the SAE design competition and throwing NMSU College of Engineering T-shirts to the crowd.

NMSU SAE President Karl Johannes said he doesn't think that many college students know about the track, but it is something for college students to do and it is fun.

"It's something for college kids to do on a Friday or Saturday night," Johannes said.

NMSU SAE plans to use the funds they will receive towards the car they are building for the upcoming SAE Mini Baja competition. In April and May of 2014, the NMSU team will be competing in El Paso, Texas, and Kansas.

Johannes said the club gives students hands-on experience and is great for learning how things run in a professional environment.

The speedway hosts a variety of racecars every weekend from March to November. The track will pay more than $70,000 in prize money for the three-day event. The Southern New Mexico Speedway is located 11 miles west of Las Cruces at the Southern New Mexico State Fairgrounds. The track opens at 5:30 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m.
