NMSU to host Binational Summit with Chihuahua officials and Mexican universities

New Mexico State University is hosting the first Binational Summit of Values and Culture of Lawfulness at the NMSU Corbett Center on Nov. 6 and in Chihuahua on Nov. 5.


NMSU's international and border programs and the Border Epidemiology and Environmental Health Center along with Chihuahua's Attorney General's Office, Autonomous University of Chihuahua and Autonomous University of Ciudad Juarez are sponsoring the summit, which is in the first year at NMSU and sixth in Chihuahua.

"The objective of the summit is to analyze the causes and implications of the current insecurity in the Mexico-U.S. border and through the participation of diverse sectors of society, identify alternative solutions to rebuild the social fabric and the harmonious coexistence," said Hugo Vilchis, NMSU College of Health and Social Services associate professor and summit co-chair.

New Mexico Attorney General Gary King is the featured speaker at NMSU's portion of the conference. The summit is free and open to the public.

The conference includes three roundtables beginning at 8 a.m. about criminal justice/government, mental health and observatory for security and conviviality/collective impact. King presents the keynote address at 10:25 a.m. followed by a panel on "The role of universities as instruments of social and peace development in the Mexico-U.S. border" at 11:10 a.m.
