New Mexico State to co-sponsor workshop on trucking safety

New Mexico State University's Bureau of Business Research will co-sponsor a workshop on truck transportation security and safety from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at El Paso's Marriot Hotel, 1600 Airway Blvd.

soring the seminar with New Mexico State is the U. S. Department of Energy's Carlsbad, N. M., Field Office as part of the National Border Technology Partnership program, said Erin Ross, assistant director of the Bureau of Business Research.

The workshop will focus on new, innovative technologies developed to meet the Department of Energy's mandates.

There will be panel discussions on current and future transportation security needs and on the applicability of Department of Energy security and safety systems to the trucking industry, Ross said.

There will also be presentations on physical security methods and cost-effective commercially available security technology applicable to both mobile vehicles and fixed transportation facilities. Materials and equipment will be available for viewing, handling and detailed inspection, she said.

"The safety of our trucking fleets has become a larger issue since of the events of Sept. 11. In light of the Department of Energy's mandate to mitigate the risk to people through security and safety, this workshop should help the trucking industry address some of their concerns," Ross said.
