Expert Background

Garrey Carruthers, president of New Mexico State University, has lead a career covering business, academics and public life. He has a bachelor?s in agriculture and master?s in agricultural economics, both from NMSU. After receiving a Ph.D. in economics from Iowa State University, Carruthers returned to NMSU, this time as a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business. In 1986, Carruthers ran for and won the New Mexico governor?s office. After leaving office, Carruthers joined the business world, founding a managed care company where he served as president and CEO. In 2003, Carruthers became dean of NMSU?s College of Business. He helped establish the university?s economic development operation, the Arrowhead Center, and served as NMSU?s vice president for economic development. Carruthers was instrumental in founding NMSU?s Pete V. Domenici Institute and continues to serve as its director. He has served as the principal investigator for a grant from the Daniels Foundation to promote ethics education. He became the university?s president in 2013 and continues to focus on his passions of entrepreneurship, ethics and leadership.
