New Mexico State University awarded late Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez with a posthumous degree during the university?s fall 2016 commencement ceremony Dec. 10 at the Pan American Center. Chavez, an NMSU student, died Aug. 12 after being shot during a traffic stop.

?Officer Chavez was a dedicated student and gave his life serving this community,? NMSU Chancellor Garrey Carruthers said during the commencement attended by more than 1,000 graduates. ?He absolutely earned this degree and we were proud to present it to his family. He?s a perfect example of how NMSU is a caring community.?

Employee Council nominations are open through Thursday

Employee Council is seeking several nominations to fill member and alternate positions for three-year terms beginning February 2017.

The Employee Council is an advisory body to the president for matters affecting NMSU employees and works closely with the university administration to promote and support the mission and vision of NMSU. Members participate in a number of university standing committees focused on the administration of university policies, initiatives and incentives. Serving on the Employee Council is an excellent way to learn more about NMSU and how it operates, and become more involved in initiatives that benefit NMSU employees. The Council is led by a chair and other officers who also serve on university executive-level administrative and policy making councils and boards. To learn more about Employee Council, please visit http://empcouncil.nmsu.edu/.

Members, chosen from exempt staff, faculty and non-exempt staff not represented by a bargaining unit, are nominated and elected by their peers. Membership is distributed to ensure that equitable representation is afforded to faculty and staff at all university units and locations. Members may serve consecutive terms.

Nominations for the Council are open through Thursday, Dec. 22. Employees may nominate themselves or other employees for the Employee Council. The nomination form can be accessed at https://hrs-apps.nmsu.edu/hrp/faces/nominate.xhtml.

For additional information, please contact Adam Cavotta, NMSU Employee Council chair-elect, at cavotta@nmsu.edu.
