Garrett strives to positively represent NMSU and the Cooperative Extension Service

Date: 11/09/2010

For a New Mexico State University staff member, representing the university in a positive way plays a large role in her job with the Cooperative Extension Service.

Bea Garrett has served as the assistant to the director of the New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service since 1997.

Bea Garrett has served as the assistant to the director of the New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service since 1997. She's participated on numerous committees and was honored with the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences Distinguished Classified Staff Award

"As a land-grant institution, NMSU is a university for the people, and we are here to help all of our clientele throughout the state," Garrett said. "It's important to represent the university, college and the CES in a positive way."

However, personally, photography is her lifelong passion.

Garrett credits her father for her love of photography; he gave her a camera when she was five. Garrett also used his film camera for years until recently buying a digital camera.

"My dad is the one that started it all; he was the true photographer in our family," she said.

Garrett currently is exploring the capabilities of her new digital camera, and said she never goes out with a pre-conceived idea of what to photograph. Instead, she just takes a camera with her and is open to anything that comes along.

One of the most unique photographs Garrett has taken was of pictographs she saw while hiking in the Gila National Forest.

"I love petroglyphs, but had never taken a picture of pictographs before," she said. "I'm always amazed by the light in New Mexico and what you can do with it."

A Las Cruces resident since 1973, Garrett feels her children were fortunate to grow up here, and now her grandson is a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering at NMSU.
