Evening Star Sciarabba performs a hula hoop dance Thursday, April 12, 2012, under a canopy of tree leaves near Corbett Center. Although Sciarabba mostly does hoop dancing for her own, private enjoyment, she sometimes performs at the Las Cruces farmer's market downtown, and always draws a crowd when she performs outside on campus. Sciarabba says hoop dancing provides a way of "manipulating the positive and negative space around you... and is defined by what you can do with that space." Although Sciarabba is self-taught, she indicates prior ballet training made hoop dancing come easy to her. Sciarabba is currently enrolled at Dona Ana Community College, but plans to transfer to NMSU next semester to continue working on a double major in anthropology and history.
